Winter Fuel Information Cold Flow Improvers are designed to extend the operability of fuels without the use of # 1 fuel. Diesel fuel treated with cold flow improvers when the fuel is 10 degrees above its cloud point will change the wax structure to a pin-like structure. This allows the wax to pass through filters at a colder temperature. Keep in mind to treat the fuel before it gets cold for best performance. Cloud Point is the temperature at which paraffin, which is naturally present in # 2 diesel fuel, begins to form cloudy wax crystals. When the fuel temperature reaches the cloud point, these wax crystals flow with the fuel, and coat the filter element. Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) is the temperature when fuel will plug filters. # 1 typically has a cloud point and CFPP of -40°F # 2 typically has a cloud point and CFPP of 14°F ULSD has a different wax structure than low sulfur diesel fuels. ULSD wax tends to drop out more quickly. ULSD is more difficult to treat with cold flow improvers and #1 blended doesn't reduce the cloud point as readily. Aftermarket Additives contain emulsifiers that suspend water. Follow the recommended treat rate. Do not over-treat. Equipment filter drains are deigned to drain water off the bottom. If the water is suspended in the fuel, it can freeze in the filter and restrict the flow of fuel, similar to a gelling condition. Rule of Thumb: 10% of #1 will reduce the cloud point of #2 by 3 degrees. Remember: #1 fuel or CFI will not have an effect on fuel that has reached cloud point. Tank Maintenance: Water is the largest enemy to the fuel system. Water causes rust, corrosion and biological growth. In cold weather water will freeze, creating fuel line and filter plugging. Drain water from tanks and change filters on a regular basis to help minimize problems. Premium Fuel: We provide Ruby Fieldmaster for the farm, and Roadmaster XL for the highway.
